What is Ausbildung?

Learning at school and at work.

Germany’s dual vocational training system combines practical training in a company with lessons at a vocational school. Programs usually last between two and three-and-a-half years and end with a final examination.

  • Train for a recognized occupation.
  • Receive a monthly training allowance from the company.
  • Build practical experience directly in the workplace.
  • Develop professional skills in German.

Typical preparation

What applicants normally need.

Exact requirements vary by occupation, employer, training school and visa case.

German language skills

B1 is normally required for a vocational-training visa when the training institution has not already assessed your German. Many employers or occupations may expect stronger communication skills, sometimes B2.

School qualification

You need an appropriate school-leaving qualification. The employer, vocational school and competent authorities determine whether your documents meet their requirements.

Training contract

For a vocational-training visa, applicants generally need a confirmed training place or contract in Germany and must meet the applicable financial and visa requirements.

You do not have to plan every step alone.MLC supports your language preparation and general orientation. If you need help with applications, employer matching or the process beyond language learning, we can connect you with suitable partner agencies where available.
